Scramble To Fund New Doyle Drive Golden Gate Bridge Approach
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) - The $1.1 billion project to replace San Francisco's dangerous approach to the Golden Gate Bridge could face another delay, as leaders scramble to line up funding.
The first phase is nearing completion on Doyle Drive, an approach originally built in 1937 that sits on unstable soil and lacks a median or shoulders.
The second phase was scheduled to start within weeks. But according to the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority needs to come up with $60 million that hasn't come through from federal and state sources.
The California Transportation Commission is considering whether to approve a $34 million advance from a regional agency. But officials still must find the remaining money.
A delay could further drive up the price on a project that already costs $25 million more than projected.
