Students OK After Concord School Bus Crash
CONCORD (BCN) - A Pittsburg woman who crashed head-on into a school bus in Concord Monday morning appears to have suffered a possible cardiac problem just before the crash, California Highway Patrol Officer Tom Maguire said.
The low-speed crash happened shortly before 8 a.m. at the intersection of Cowell Road and Babel Lane.
A Mount Diablo Unified School District bus with four students on board was stopped at a red light on eastbound Cowell Road waiting to turn onto Babel Lane when the driver of a 2002 Volvo sideswiped another vehicle then drove slowly through the intersection - possibly coasting through a red light - and struck the bus, Maguire said.
The driver of the Volvo, a 59-year-old Pittsburg woman, was unresponsive at the scene. She was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Concord, where she was placed on life support, Maguire said.
The driver of the school bus and the children on board were all wearing seat belts and nobody on the bus was hurt, Maguire said.
The children were picked up at the scene by their parents, Maguire said.
Nobody in the first vehicle that was hit was hurt, Maguire said.
The road was closed for about two hours while the CHP investigated the crash. It was reopened at about 10 a.m., Maguire said.
