Sausalito Homeowner Finds WWII Grenade In Front Yard
SAUSALITO (CBS SF) - A Sausalito resident replacing a mailbox post found a potentially explosive surprise on Wednesday - a World War II-era grenade buried in the front yard, police said.
The homeowner in Arana Circle reported finding a possible hand grenade there shortly after 5 p.m.
Officers responded minutes later and determined the grenade was a World War II-era fragmentation grenade and had been buried there for many years.
Police cleared the streets and instructed residents nearby to shelter in place and to stay away from their windows.
The University of California at Berkeley police bomb squad responded to assist at around 6:20 p.m. and determined that while the grenade was real, the explosive charge had been removed before it was buried.
The bomb squad took the grenade to dispose of it.
Police recommend that anyone who finds an explosive device stay away from it and call 911.
