Santa Cruz Police Release Detailed Timeline Of Rampage That Killed 2 Officers
SANTA CRUZ (KCBS) - The Santa Cruz Police Department has concluded its investigation into the fatal shootings earlier this year of detectives Butch Baker and Elizabeth Butler.
Baker and Butler went to the home of Jeremy Goulet on Feb. 26 to arrest him on sexual assault charges. Goulet agreed to come out of the home, then exited from a door the officers had not expected, firing five rounds in three seconds from a .45-caliber handgun, according to the official police report released Thursday.
"Our investigation determined that the first two rounds were fired at Detective Butler. One round missed her. One round took her to the ground. The next three rounds were fired at Sgt. Baker. One round missed him. The other two rounds disabled him and knocked him to the ground," said Santa Cruz County Sheriff Phill Wowack.
Goulet then fired two more rounds into Baker as he lay on the ground, then took the slain officer's weapon and used it to fire another shot at Butler, Wowack said, then fled in their unmarked police vehicle.
More than 30 minutes later, Goulet returned to the scene of the shooting on the 800 block of North Branciforte Avenue with guns still blazing.

That's when four police officers unleashed 54 rounds on Goulet, killing him.
"Four brave and courageous law enforcement officers walked through the gates of hell, discharged their firearms and ended this horrific event," said Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Voegel.
"These officers were truly the thin blue line that stood between this deranged individual and our community on that day."
The police report will now be submitted to the Santa Cruz Public Safety Committee for review, Voegel said.
