Santa Cruz Bank Robbery Suspect Nabbed After Being Spotted At Mall
CAPITOLA (CBS SF) -- A Soquel man was arrested Wednesday for a bank robbery that occurred in Santa Cruz last week after being spotted at a Capitola mall by an alert off-duty sheriff's employee, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.
Darren Davis, 48, was arrested after being linked to the robbery of a Wells Fargo bank branch at 1750 Soquel Drive in Santa Cruz last Friday, sheriff's Deputy Ryan Kennedy said.
The crime happened around 3 p.m. and the robber made off with several thousand dollars, Kennedy said.
Deputies who investigated the robbery identified some key "descriptors" about the suspect and his escape, according to the sheriff's office.
Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, an off-duty sheriff's employee saw Davis at the Capitola Mall and thought he looked like the man she had seen in surveillance video footage of the bank robbery, Kennedy said.
She contacted deputies, who arrived at the mall, questioned Davis and took him into custody.
Sheriff's detectives later served a search warrant and located further evidence that tied Davis to the crime, Kennedy said.
