Santa Clara Man Shot, Killed By Police During DUI Traffic Stop

SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) -- A 42-year-old man was fatally shot by a Santa Clara police officer during a DUI investigation on Saturday night.

The suspect, a Santa Clara man, was pulled over by a uniformed officer in the 2400 block of Karen Drive at about 9:45 p.m., according to Santa Clara police.

During the stop, the man became uncooperative and the officer requested assistance, police said.

Before additional officers arrived at the scene, the man apparently reached for a revolver in his vehicle, police said.

The officer, a two-year veteran, shot the man in self-defense, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The revolver was later determined to be loaded.

Police did not release the suspect's identity Sunday morning.

The incident is being investigated by the police department and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Santa Clara police Detective Sgt. Brian Gilbert at (408) 615-4849.
