CHP Seeks Driver Who Fled Scene Of Deadly Santa Clara Street Race
SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) – Authorities are looking for a sedan that was in a high-speed race with another car that crashed and killed a driver in Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The sedan was described as a silver Acura TSX or TL that was racing with a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro driven by a man in his 20s on San Tomas Expressway around 12:30 p.m., CHP Officer Ross Lee said.
Witnesses saw both vehicles heading north at about 100 mph toward stopped traffic near Homestead Road, an area that typically sees street racing at night, Lee said.
The Acura managed to leave the area without hitting any cars, but the Chevy swerved to the right, crashed into a sidewalk and became wedged between a tree and sound wall, according to Lee.
Investigators believe the Chevy driver was killed in the crash and not in a car fire that was quickly extinguished by firefighters, Lee said.
The Chevy driver's name will be released once the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office notifies his next of kin.
The driver who fled was described as a Hispanic man in his mid-20s to mid-30s with a faded haircut, according to Lee.
