Santa Clara Couple Makes Statement With Marriage At Grammys
SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) - A Bay Area couple was among the 33 which said "I do" during the Grammy Award show Sunday night. Music's biggest night turned into Brandon Styles and Kevin Masek's biggest day.
During the program, Madonna took the stage with hip hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who performed their hit song on marriage equality 'Same Love.' In the crowd below, the couples -- both gay and straight -- were married by Queen Latifah.
"I feel like it's an anthem for gay people to be recognized as regular citizens and not necessarily second class citizens anymore," Styles said of the song.
He said the 48 hours surrounding the show have been a memorable whirlwind.
"I couldn't help but start crying when I saw the first couple people tearing up, when I saw Keith Urban crying like a baby," said Styles.
Styles said he and his partner - who live in Santa Clara - found out on Christmas Eve that they would be getting married at the Grammys. The couple got a call from a casting agent last fall, inviting them to exchange vows on TV. They knew it would be life changing.
Not everyone is happy about being on the guest list for the mass wedding. Styles said he's been hurt by some of the nasty comments on social media.
"(I) can't really figure out why they continue to do so when we are not trying to take anything away from them. We're not trying to make their lives worse. We're just trying to exist harmoniously with them – equally," said Styles.
Styles and his husband will have to wait to celebrate their marriage. Masek is in Haiti on a medical mission trip.
The couple had once been on a reality show, and the agent kept their number on file. They were sworn to secrecy in the days leading up to the show.
