Santa Clara Breaks Ground On Proposed 49ers Stadium Parking Lot
SANTA CLARA (KCBS) – Santa Clara officials are getting the ball rolling on the proposed new 49ers Stadium by breaking ground on a parking garage for the site.
Thursday's ceremony was held for the six-story, 1,800 space garage right across the street from the proposed stadium near California's Great America.
KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:
Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews said that this is just the latest sign that the 49ers will be playing in the South Bay in 2015.
"The doubters should have been quieted with the $138 million we did in advanced sales for suites," Matthews said. "There's no doubt, in 18 months, we're breaking ground."
City Engineer Rajeev Batra said that this will be one of the most attractive parking structures ever built.
"Generally, you just see concrete and ramps and things like that," said Batra. "But in this case, we have a nice screen on the Tasman side. It's a metal screen, which is more aesthetically pleasing."
Stadium groundbreaking is projected for sometime in 2013.
