Sanders Makes Surprise Campaign Stop In San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- In addition to two scheduled stops in the Bay Area, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders made a third surprise visit in San Francisco Wednesday afternoon.

Representatives for the hotel & restaurant workers union, Unite Here! Local 2, and the janitors' union, SEIU Local 87, sent out a press release Wednesday afternoon announcing an impromptu labor rally and march in San Francisco.

A group of about 100 or so people gathered downtown at Justin Herman Plaza before marching to 101 California Street. The crowd grew as word of mouth spread via social media and curious onlookers who noticed the heavy police presence.

Sanders showed up shortly before 5 p.m. and spoke to the gathered supporters for about 10 minutes. He shook hands with people in the crowd and posed for a few photos before heading off.

Sanders already spoke to a crowd of several thousand people in San Jose earlier Wednesday afternoon.

He is scheduled to attend a 7:30 p.m. program at Vallejo's Waterfront Park expected to draw an estimated 10,000 to 18,000 people downtown. City officials are advising the public of traffic in the area for the event.
