2 Killed In Fiery Crash Along I-680 Work Zone In San Ramon
SAN RAMON (CBS SF) -- The California Highway Patrol has reopened lanes on Interstate Highway 680 in San Ramon after a fiery crash killed two people early Sunday morning.
The three-car collision was reported just after 1:20 a.m. on southbound Highway 680 at the Crow Canyon Road off-ramp, according to the CHP.
The crash happened along a stretch where California Department of Transportation workers had blocked lanes.
There were no injuries to Caltrans workers.
Caltrans had set up cones leaving only the fast lane open on southbound 680.
The CHP said a Nissan Maxima rear-ended a BMW, causing both vehicles to spin out of control and cross into the Caltrans work zone.
The Nissan hit a forklift and burst into flames, trapping the driver. The BMW hit a Caltrans pickup truck, killing a passenger and critically injuring the driver.
Multiple passengers appeared to be trapped in the vehicle that caught fire, according to the CHP.
Two people were declared dead at the scene, and a third was taken to a hospital with major injuries, CHP Officer James Evans said.
The CHP issued a Sig-alert at 1:36 a.m. and shut down the roadway until about 8:05 a.m., the CHP said.
