San Quentin Inmate Sentenced In Prison Yard Fatal Stabbing
NOVATO (CBS/AP) -- The San Quentin prison inmate convicted of murdering another inmate who was serving time in the death of a 9-year-old girl has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Frank Souza read a statement of condolence to the family of 9-year-old Melody Osheroff during his sentencing hearing on Wednesday, saying the innocence of a child will be defended at all costs. Souza also read from the poem, "Invictus."
The 33-year-old Souza pleaded guilty in February to stabbing 44-year-old Edward Schaefer seven times in a prison yard in 2010. Schaefer had just begun serving his sentence in Osheroff's death. He was convicted of striking and killing the girl and maiming her father, Aaron, in 2009 in Novato with his motorcycle while intoxicated.
Souza was serving time on a murder conviction.
