San Pablo Hospital Again Facing Major Financial Problems
SAN PABLO (KCBS) – Doctors Medical Center, San Pablo has been bankrupt before and could be forced into another Chapter 9 filing in the near future.
Five years ago, the facility declared bankruptcy. Operating with a $17 million deficit, Interim Chief Executive Officer Dawn Gideon said the hospital's financial future is now on the fast track.
"Within the next 60 days, there will be greater clarity on any number of these issues," she said. "There are five city councils in the district and we're talking with each of them to make sure they know where we stand at this point of our planning and deliberation."
KCBS' Dave Padilla Reports:
The state used to allocate $12 million a year to Doctors Medical Center, San Pablo, but now, it's more like $1-2 million.
But Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia said the county's $10 million investment remains secure.
"The pay back is guaranteed because it is paid back through the property taxes that the district receives," Gioia said.
A governing committee was created within the West Contra Costa Healthcare District to better manage and implement financial decisions for the hospital.
