San Mateo Bridge Work On Schedule To Finish By Monday Morning's Commute
SAN MATEO (CBS SF) -- Caltrans says crews are on schedule to reopen the Hayward-San Mateo Bridge for Monday morning's commute.
The bridge has been closed since Friday night as crews resurfaced the high-rise section.
Crews were ripping out the old pieces of the roadway which have been in place since 1967, and replacing them with a polyester pavement that's built for the Bay Area's constantly changing climate.
Caltrans had to shut down the entire bridge to ensure a safe work environment for crews.

"We have to have the full closure because to work in that center lane, you have to have, you know with the size of the equipment and everything for worker safety when you're working in a center lane, it's really best to close all three lanes," Caltrans Spokesman Allyn Amsk said.
The bridge was scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday morning.
There is another closure planned for Memorial Day weekend to finish the work on the high-rise section.
