San Leandro Police Kill Car Theft Suspect After Chase
OAKLAND (CBS/BCN/AP) - Authorities said a San Leandro police officer fatally shot a woman after a car chase that ended in a crash in Oakland.
At about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, two San Leandro police officers on patrol in the 600 block of MacArthur Boulevard spotted a car that had been reported stolen hours earlier, police said.
KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:
The driver of the car accelerated away from the officers, and they chased the vehicle into Oakland, where it crashed in the 10900 block of Bancroft Avenue.
While attempting to arrest the car's driver and passenger, one of the San Leandro officers opened fire to protect the other officer's life, according to police.
Police at the scene gave medical aid to the wounded woman, who later died at a hospital. The woman's identity is not yet being released by the Alameda County coroner's bureau.
The second suspect, also yet to be named, was taken into custody after a brief struggle, police said.
The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with department policy.
Police have not yet released additional details about the confrontation.
Oakland police homicide investigators were called to the scene because the shooting happened within Oakland city limits, and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office also responded.
San Leandro police are conducting an administrative investigation.
