San Jose's HP Pavilion To Officially Become SAP Center Next Week
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Executives from SAP, the San Jose Sharks, and the City of San Jose will host a special unveiling ceremony next week for the new SAP Center, officially re-naming the sports and entertainment venue that has been known as HP Pavilion.
Officials scheduled the media event for 10:15 a.m. next Tuesday, July 9 at the facility.
The event follows the approval of a new naming agreement last month by the San Jose City Council; the five-year deal is worth $8.375 million.
The arena opened in 1993 as the San Jose Arena. In 2001, naming rights were sold to Compaq, and the facility became Compaq Center at San Jose. After HP purchased Compaq in 2002, the company chose to name the arena the HP Pavilion.
The arena is also commonly called The Shark Tank or The Tank, both of which come from its primary tenant, the NHL's Sharks.
