San Jose Roads Skewered In New Report
SAN JOSE (KCBS) – Another causality of San Jose's ongoing yearly budget shortfalls is road maintenance, and a newly-released report shows how bad things have gotten.
KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:
More than 70 miles of streets in Councilwoman Nancy Pyle's south San Jose district are listed as poor.
"We have some really bad roads," said Pyle. "People keep telling me they've had to have their tires adjusted because they're having alignment problems."
Some drivers even say they've altered their commute to avoid potholes.
San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed said the problem is that the city just doesn't have the money to spend on infrastructure improvement.
"The council and the community have basically decided that cutting money from road maintenance is better than cutting money from libraries and community centers," said Reed.
The backlog of deferred maintenance is expected to reach nearly one billion dollars by 2020.
