Man Shot Dead Across From San Jose School; 4th Homicide This Week
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A San Jose elementary school was closed as police investigated a fatal shooting that happened nearby early Thursday morning.
Officers responded to the 1300 block of Dubert Lane after receiving reports of gunfire at 5:21 a.m.
Residents "heard shots, heard screaming," San Jose police spokesman Officer Albert Morales said.
Police arrived to find a young man shot at least once at the northeast corner of the intersection of Santee and Audubon drives.
The man, who is believed to be 19 or 20 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene, Morales said.
The shooting happened right outside Santee Elementary School, and classes were canceled Thursday as police swarmed the neighborhood.
No arrests have been made in the case and the motive is not yet clear, but Morales said there is no immediate indication the killing was gang-related.
"It does not appear to be, but it's too early" to tell, he said.
Homicide investigators were still talking to witnesses, Morales said. The victim's name had not yet been released.
Morales said no students or staff from the school were present at the time of the shooting.
