San Jose Man Converts House Into Indiana Jones' Temple Of Doom
SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) - A San Jose man who transforms his house into over-the-top Halloween motifs has outdone himself again by remaking his home into a three-story Temple of Doom from the Indiana Jones movie.
Bob Schiro converted his front yard into a pirate ship in 2011 and last year, he remade his home into a haunted mansion.
This year, Schiro's home on Church Drive is a three-story ode to one of the most iconic movies of all time.
The attention to detail is everywhere. Remember the snake pit scene? It's there - although the snakes are fake. How about the part where the man's heart was ripped out and he drops into hot magma? Schiro recreated that whole sacrifice scene, complete with simulated lava and a throbbing, battery-powered heart.
Of course, who can forget when Indiana stole the golden statue and triggered the giant rolling stone?
Schiro says everyone gets a kick out the re-enactment he whipped up, using a garage door opener hooked up to a giant styrofoam ball.
Construction on the Temple of Doom began on August 1. Schiro is a contractor and tries to recycle unused building materials.
Schiro spent about $4,000 and relied on a dozen neighbors who volunteered more than 1,000 hours.
Is there an easy answer for why he does all this? "I think so," Schiro said. For four hours on Halloween, everybody comes together, and for those four hours, we're all on the same page enjoying something that's really cool."
