San Jose House Fire Displaces 5 Residents, 7 Dogs
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Firefighters responded a one-alarm fire that badly damaged a home in San Jose Friday morning.
The fire broke out around 2 a.m. at a residence on Sundown Lane.
There have been no reported injuries in the blaze, but five people and seven dogs have been displaced.
Investigators say the residents have not had power since March have been using a generator and candles to see at night. Those candles are likely to have started this fire.
San Jose Fire say this is not unusual in the Bay Area.
"Rents are high," said Fire Captain Mitch Marlow. "As rents go up they put more and more people into the house to share the expense and that means there's more property and more people to get out of the house in the event of a fire."
The fire has caused severe damage to the residence, especially to the garage area, firefighters said.
"Well they can judge us all they want," said resident Kimberly Williams. "They don't know us and they don't know what's really going on. There's nothing I can do about that."
