San Jose Homeowner Kills Intruder In Mystery Home Invasion Shootout
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) - A San Jose homeowner is suspected of killing a burglar overnight in East San Jose in what police believe is a case of self-defense, but many of the details are still a mystery.
Police responded to a 911 call just before 8:00 p.m. Thursday about shots fired on the 3500 block of Pine Ridge Way.
Officers arrived at a home where the homeowner said he heard someone breaking into his home and fire shots in his direction. "What he did after that was he armed himself with a firearm that belonged to him and returned fire in the direction of where this subject was, in defense of his life," said San Jose Police Sgt. Albert Morales.
At least two men took off in a speeding vehicle and one of them ended up being dropped off at a local hospital where he died of gunshot wounds. He was not identified.
No one else was injured. Neighbors on the block were understandably concerned.
"It's just scary because I've got kids that come over here and play basketball and stuff," said Fabiola Miranda. "It's very intense."
Homicide investigators believe there is a lot more to the story than people are letting on.
"We have some people who are being less than truthful about information that they know about respect to what happened there," said Morales.
"It's a very confusing case and we don't have much information."
The killing was the city's 8th homicide of 2014.
