San Jose Community Colleges May Lose Federal Accreditation
SAN JOSE (KCBS) - Community college students in San Jose may soon be wondering if their units will be transferable a few years down the road. Two local campuses have been told to make changes or risk the loss of accreditation, something that - understandably - is unsettling for many students.
KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:
The San Jose Evergreen Community College District has two city colleges within San Jose city limits, and both have landed in hot water with the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, which is overseen by the federal Department of Education.
Evergreen Valley College has received a warning from the commission, and City College was placed on probation by the commission and told to fix problems with planning, student evaluation, and management or risk possible loss of accreditation.
"How do you feel about this possible loss of accreditation at City College?" asked KCBS reporter Matt Bigler.
"Not good, kind of shocked," the student responded. "I expected to know about this or at least hear about it before now."
District spokeswoman Monica Gomez insisted students shouldn't be concerned.
"Our colleges are accredited, they are not at risk of losing the accreditation," she insisted. "We have new leadership in the district, we also have a new chancellor. So we are very confident that we will overcome all this and we have until October to really show that we are moving in the right direction," Gomez explained.
