San Jose Bank Robbery Suspects Toss Money Onto Hwy 101 During Police Chase
GILROY (CBS SF) - San Jose police arrested three bank robbery suspects after a high-speed chase on U.S. Highway 101 Tuesday morning, a police sergeant said.
Police responded around 10:40 a.m. to a report of an armed robbery at a Wells Fargo Bank at 3331 San Felipe Road in San Jose.
Officers determined that three suspects armed with handguns had entered the bank and committed a takeover robbery, then fled in a waiting car described as a silver Jeep SUV, police Sgt. Jason Dwyer said.
The suspects were identified as Salinas residents Jorge Lopez, 26, Ray Botello, 24, and 23-year-old Luis Gonzalez.
Police attempted to stop the car, and when the driver wouldn't pull over, they chased it onto southbound Highway 101 near Hellyer Avenue.
During the chase, the suspects tossed cash from the bank out of the car windows and onto the freeway, police said.
Several officers left the chase to halt traffic and recover the discarded money.
The suspects' car came to a stop on Highway 101 at 10th Street in Gilroy. The three suspects were arrested and taken to the San Jose Police Department.
Officers also found a firearm and a police scanner in the suspects' Jeep, which was listed as a stolen vehicle out of Greenfield, Calif., according to Dwyer.
