San Francisco's Economy Scores With Giants In Playoffs

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - When the San Francisco Giants clinched the National League West title over the weekend, it wasn't just a great moment for the players and local fans. It was, and will continue to be, a banner moment for the team's front office and the City's economy as well.

After all, baseball fans all over the country watched the Giants' 8-4 victory over the San Diego Padres Saturday evening. And, it stood to reason that at least some of those sports aficionados would be headed our way.

"Coming to AT&T Park, over the last several years since we opened here, it's a landmark," declared Mario Alioto, Giants Senior Vice President, Revenue. "I think we'll notice that there will be more visitors and more people traveling from other parts of the country so it really benefits the hotels, it benefits the restaurants."

Out-of-towners best not delay in buying their tickets.

"We've been sold out, you know, the whole season," Alioto declared. "We have over 29,000 season ticket holders this year, which really builds that base that you need to run a business."

KCBS' Jeffrey Schaub Reports:

A winning team, after all, is a healthy team - financially speaking. And, the Giants have done pretty well the past few years.

"Everywhere you go, I mean, you see Giants fans wearing our shirts and caps," said Alioto. "There are more fans walking around with Giants merchandise, probably than in our history."

Do the math on ticket and merchandise sales, and that's a lot of cash exchanging hands.

"A baseball season is a long season," Alioto pointed out.

The Giants will begin the National League Division Series the first weekend in October.
