San Francisco's 'Creativity Explored' Helping Disabled Artists Grow

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS) -- Creativity Explored is home to budding artists in San Francisco's Mission District with developmental disabilities. It was the brainchild of a Psychologist and his Artist wife 29 years ago.

The couple believed Art would be the perfect medium to help adults express their creativity and 135 artists are now growing ten fold in every direction. Executive Director Amy Taub says it's all about family, "What we do is give people a safe and nurturing space to develop who they are as artist and to really grown."

It's working by creating a wonderful dialogue: a communication that's spawned out of creating Art, but the program is so much more. With each stroke of the brush it's built a family and given these artists a true sense of belonging. Vincent Jackson has been at Creativity Explored for 25-plus years, "'This is what the program is about. Were not about foolishness….were about changing lives."

And it's happening! Several pieces of Art are on display worldwide. Some of their Artists are now represented by Galleries in Los Angeles. Even better all the work is for sale.
