San Francisco Woman Charged With Felonies In Crash That Killed Teen
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Charges were announced Monday by San Francisco prosecutors against a 58-year-old woman for felony gross vehicular manslaughter for allegedly causing a crash that killed a teenage boy in the city's Lower Pacific Heights neighborhood in September.
Jennie Zhu, a San Francisco resident, will be arraigned Thursday on the manslaughter charge and two felony counts of reckless driving causing serious injury, district attorney's office spokesman Alex Bastian said.
Zhu was arrested on the charges late Friday night, but has since posted $300,200 bail and was released from custody, Bastian said.
Zhu is accused of going through multiple stoplights on Pine Street in a Mercedes SUV on the morning of September 27 before rear-ending a minivan occupied by a mother and her teenage son and daughter.
The son, 16-year-old Lincoln High School student Kevin San, was killed in the crash that also critically injured his mom and sister.
"This has been a very thorough investigation in this case. We wanted to make sure that we charged the case appropriately based on the evidence that we could gather and that investigation took some time," District Attorney George Gascon said.
Zhu faces up to seven years and four months behind bars if convicted.
