San Francisco Supes To Fine-Tune Local Hiring Ordinance
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)- A toned-down version of a tough local hiring ordinance will be taken up at the San Francisco Board of Supervisors Wednesday. The goal of hiring locally remains, with supervisors exploring an extended time period to reach it.

For years San Francisco has had local hiring goals, but according to Supervisor John Avalos, they've rarely been met.
"We can do better. By having mandatory levels of local hiring we can ensure that we are reaching a much, much higher goal," said Avalos.
The mandate would be phased in over six years, starting with a 25 percent local hiring requirement in the first year and five percent increases each year until 50 percent is reached.
"When it comes to making local investments with our tax dollars for building our public infrastructure, it makes sense that we have as much benefit as we can at the local level," said Avalos.
Originally Avalos proposed a faster mandate, but that would begin at 30 percent and rise to 50 percent more rapidly. He met with some resistance and the legislation was amended.
