San Francisco Supervisors Rally Support For Central Subway Project
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) –The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is trying to quell the notion that support is waning for the Central Subway Project.
A resolution introduced at Tuesday's board meeting aimed to show that San Francisco is still behind the Central Subway, despite the recent, and very vocal opposition from mayoral candidate and City Attorney Dennis Herrera.
Supervisors David Chiu and John Avalos, who are also in the mayor's race, added their comments to the debate.
"Great cities do not regret building subways," said Chiu. "Great cities regret not building subways."
KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:
"I've actually been quite alarmed lately at how the Central Subway has been politicized by some of the very people who have been supporters in the past," said Avalos.
However, within hours of the resolution's introduction, Herrera shot out an email that said that "reasonable minds can disagree, but I strongly believe that the one billion dollar per mile Central Subway isn't justified, poses a grave risk to Muni's financial stability and will adversely impact transit riders citywide."
The Central Subway will run from the Caltrain Station to Moscone Center, stop at Union Square and end at Chinatown.
