San Francisco Scraps Plan To Charge Commuter Tolls
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco has ditched a plan to charge commuters as much as $6 to cross the city's southern border.
The Board of Supervisors voted 9-2 to kill the proposal Tuesday after Peninsula leaders threatened a retaliatory toll.
KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:
The San Mateo County Times reports the plan would have cost Peninsula commuters up to $1,500 annually to drive in and out of San Francisco during morning and evening rush hour.
The fees would have generated an estimated $80 million annually to pay for local transportation projects.
Instead, the board approved the study of a plan to charge commuters who drive downtown during peak traffic times.
City leaders and the state Legislature would have to approve any toll before it takes effect in 2015. And it could be put up to a vote.
