SAN FRANCISCO — A person armed with knives barricaded himself inside a Chase Bank in San Francisco on Monday afternoon, police said.

Officers first received a report around 1:40 p.m. about someone with knives entering a business on the 1700 block of Fulton Street.

Police said the suspect had a verbal altercation with an employee and then brandished the knives. Employees were not able to flee and took refuge inside the bank.

Officers arrived at the scene and ordered the suspect to leave the business. However, he refused, and a standoff ensued for over two hours.

He was taken into custody around 5:15 p.m. and taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.

Police said he was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and resisting arrest. More charges could be added, officials noted.

One officer was injured during the incident, but the injuries were not life-threatening.
