San Francisco Police Prepare For New Year's Eve Festivities
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The San Francisco Police Department is preparing for a busy New Year's Eve this Friday night, with the largest crowd expected along the Embarcadero for the annual fireworks show.San Francisco Police Lt. Lynn Tomioka said the waterfront fireworks display is a family event, which means it's alcohol-free. She points out that safety will be the number one decider in their zero tolerance approach.KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:
"If there's a dozen officers and 5,000 people and there's one person drinking, they are going to have to be very cautious about enforcement," said Tomioka.Lt. Tomioka also points out this New Year's Eve coincides with another regular event in San Francisco."Friday night is also the same night as Critical Mass, and this really may have a very adverse effect on traffic," said Tomioka. If you're planning to drive in San Francisco, Tomioka's advice is to be patient. There will be DUI checkpoints at specific locations in the city as well.In light of several shootings this year around San Francisco nightclubs, police are also working with the entertainment commission to ensure alcohol isn't served to intoxicated patrons.
