Mayor Optimistic About SF Central Subway After Meeting With Feds
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Earlier this week, San Francisco's Municipal Transportation Agency approved San Francisco's $137 million piece of the Central Subway project.
Still, San Francisco still needs close to $1 billion from the federal government for the project, as well.
KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:
Mayor Ed Lee has since met with top transportation officials in Washington D.C., and afterwards felt optimistic that the federal buy-in would be forthcoming.
"We are going full force ahead to submitting what we call a full funding grant agreement that will be submitted in November of this year," he explained. "They're expecting it."
Lee described this week's action by the MTA as being well received in Washington.
"They're whole team was literally clapping when I announced that we had closed the $137 million funding gap."
The Central Subway would provide an underground link between Market St. and the Chinatown neighborhood, ideally reducing congestion about ground on one of the busiest transit corridors in San Francisco.
