San Francisco Mayor Lee To Join Transgender March At Dolores Park For LGBT Pride Week
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee was scheduled to join the city's transgender community at the annual Trans March Friday, one of a series of LGBT Pride Week events leading up Sunday's Pride Parade down Market St.
The march of trans and gender non-conforming is in it's 11th year and some 7,000 people are expected at Dolores Park in the city in what organizers call the largest trans pride event in the country.
Following a brunch and scheduled activities and performances, marchers will head to Turk and Taylor Streets in the Tenderloin to the site of the 1966 Compton's Cafeteria Riot, which historians say is the first LGBT uprising, coming three years before the more famous Stonewall Riots in New York City.
Following the march as 7:30 pm, the City of San Francisco was scheduled to unveil a new street sign at Turk and Taylor named for late transgender icon and drag performer Vicki Marlane. Organizers say Marlane will be the first transgender person and the fourth LGBT person to have a street named after her in San Francisco.1351
