San Francisco Mayor Lee Opposes Muni Fare Hike, MTA Fees
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Fees, fares and fines are three words that make San Franciscans cringe— especially motorists and Muni riders. Each has gone up steadily for years and the Municipal Transportation Agency has floated a plan to raise Muni rides by 25 cents and a three-dollar increase for parking fines. They would also end the long-standing policy of free meter parking on nights and Sundays.
Mayor Ed Lee said fee fatigue is getting everyone down and that you can forget about the increases in the coming year.
KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:
Lee said he had a discussion with Ed Reiskin, head of the MTA, about finding more "creative" ways of filling the city's budget gap and to raise revenue.
"I'm sure we can find efficiencies in a way we don't fee people to death," said Lee.
Muni expects a $23 million operating deficit this year, plus another shortfall of $80 million over the next two years.
