Giants Management, Players Mull Showtime Series
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The reigning World Series champs, the San Francisco Giants, planned to meet Friday to discuss the future of a planned show billed as "reality television."
Team management has been taken aback with the tone of the show's promotion, which they understood was going to be a "docu-drama" on Showtime.
KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports:
"The way they presented it to us, being player-centric, we bought into it because you know, our players are characters," explained Giants senior vice president and general manager, Brian Sabean. "They have a lot of character, believe me they have a charitable side, they have a personal side."
Sabean has grown concerned about a slippery slope that could land the show in the realm of reality television shows.
"To trip on the proverbial banana peel and become reality television. It's not the way it's been framed and we'll have a big meeting to see if we go forward."
Manager Bruch Bochy was also concerned about the possibility that the show would become a distraction.
"We're comfortable with it now but we will meet with the players again," he emphasized. "I'm overprotective about players having their privacy."
Bochy and Sabean made their comments at an appearance at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco Thursday.
