Warehouse Burns Near Candlestick Point In San Francisco; Residents Urged To Shelter In Place
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A stubborn warehouse fire in San Francisco's Bayview-Hunters Point district sent thick smoke into the air Friday afternoon and led to a shelter-in-place alert for nearby residents.
The San Francisco Fire Department's Twitter account posted about the fire at 1300 Donner Ave. at about 1:11 p.m. Friday. The single-story warehouse is located near Candlestick Point and just north of the site of the demolished Candlestick Park stadium.
The building, described as a vacant metal shop, was searched and it's believed there was no one inside.
A second alarm was called shortly before 1:30 p.m. and a third alarm was called at 1:48 p.m.
By 2:19 p.m., a fourth alarm was called in.
A fire department spokesman said firefighters were forced to take a defensive approach to fighting the fire. Crews brought in an high pressure auxiliary water system to make up for a lack of water pressure in the area.
The San Francisco firefighters' union tweeted that the building had been boarded up prior to the fire.
People were urged to avoid the area and residents near the fire were told to shelter-in-place.
No injuries have been reported.
Just after 4:30 p.m., the fire department said the fire was contained and that the shelter-in-place alert would expire by 5:30 p.m.
