The students were given reflective slap wristbands to help them stand out when they are walking.

"These things are so cool, they're going to make you shine like a star," said San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr.
He said it is important for the kids to police their parents as well, especially when they notice them texting and driving.
"Just say – hey mom and dad, could our trip to school be our time? No phones, no phones," Suhr said. "You'll be safer, they'll be safer."
Captain Mike Redmond from the Southern Station taught the kids how to be defensive.
"How about when you're walking to school, do you ever see someone shaving when they're in their car, or putting on their makeup? That's just as bad as being on your cellphone," Redmond said.
The kids are asked to make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.
The wristbands came courtesy of West Bay Pilipino Multi-Service Center.
"Our program [is about] kids helping kids get home safe," said Executive Director Rudy Asercion, who said he hopes to expand the wristband giveaway to the Tenderloin and other parts of San Francisco as well.
