San Francisco Cyclist Faces Manslaughter Charges In Elderly Man's Death
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — The San Francisco District Attorney has issued an arrest warrant for the bicyclist accused of fatally striking an elderly pedestrian in the Castro District earlier this year.
Sources close to the case confirmed to CBS 5 that 36-year-old Chris Bucchere faces felony manslaughter charges in the death of 71-year-old Sutchi Hui.
Bucchere is suspected of striking Hui as he was crossing Market and Castro Streets on the morning of March 29th. Hui was taken to a nearby hospital where he died several days later.
Witnesses reported that Bucchere may have run several red lights and stop signs before the fatal accident and police had said that a tracker on his bike showed he was going more than 10 miles over the speed limit
On a blog posting, Bucchere allegedly said that he was too committed to stop so he laid it down and plowed through in the least-populated place he could find. He then went on to express condolences for his helmet.
The District Attorney's office plans to hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday to announce charges.
