San Francisco Marries Hundreds Of Same Sex-Sex Couples During Weekend
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Only days after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals lifted a 2010 injunction blocking same-sex marriages, the San Francisco county clerk's office has issued 563 same-sex marriage licenses and recorded 479 same-sex marriages, city officials said Sunday.
Following the court's decision on Friday, California Attorney General Kamala Harris performed the state's first same-sex marriage, wedding Proposition 8 plaintiff's Kris Perry and Sandra Stier at San Francisco City Hall shortly before 5 p.m. that day.
The county clerk's office stayed open until 8 p.m. that night and opened from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday to allow other same-sex couples to tie the knot.
San Francisco was the only county in California to open this weekend for marriages.
"Participating in these marriage ceremonies and officially recording these marriage licenses has been one of the greatest honors that has been bestowed on me," Assessor-Recorder Carmen Chu said Sunday.
"I am proud to call myself a San Franciscan and to have shared in a special moment of hundreds of same-sex couples this weekend," Chu said.
The San Francisco County Clerk's office will be open normal hours, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Monday. County clerks offices in other parts of the Bay Area and the state were expecting to be busier than usual when they reopen Monday.
