Congresswoman Pelosi Joined By Grandchildren To Serve Food At SF's St. Anthony's Dining Room
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Bay Area Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi visited St. Anthony's Dining Room in San Francisco Wednesday as part of a family tradition that goes back many years.
She was joined by her two grandchildren to serve up chicken stew, kale and rice at the dining hall on Golden Gate Avenue. She said it's important for everyone to try and help out those in need during the holiday season.
"We're here every year with our whole family that comes from all over the country and I think it's really important for our grandchildren to see that as part of our Thanksgiving tradition. But more than that— to see what their obligation is to other people," she said.
Pelosi added that charitable organizations play a vital role in helping the needy and homeless during the holidays.
"What's wonderful about St. Anthony's Dining Room and Glide Memorial and other places in the city is the respect that they have for the people who come here," said Pelosi.
Pelosi, who was just re-elected as House minority leader, said the holidays are significant this year because Congress cut food-stamp programs by $40 billion. However, that figure was reduced to $8 billion after a veto threat from President Obama.
She added that any cuts hurt people like the ones at St. Anthony's.
