Firefighters Rescue Victim In San Francisco Chinatown Fire
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Firefighters have contained a two-alarm fire that began Friday morning at a two-story building in San Francisco's Chinatown and left one man with minor injuries.
The blaze was reported at 7:47 a.m. at 1199 Stockton St., in a building with a business on the first floor and several residential units on the second floor, fire spokesman Jonathan Baxter said.
At about 1:45 p.m., fire officials said they had contained the fire.
The majority of the fire was located in the building's basement, according to Baxter.
Firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighboring buildings.
One man suffered minor smoke inhalation, however he was not hospitalized, Baxter said. No other injuries were reported.
Seven business located on the first floor have been affected and at least 20 residents living on the second floor have also been affected, according to Baxter. It was not immediately clear if all those business and residents would be displaced.
Mandarin and Cantonese translators working with the city are on site to assist the victims. The American Red Cross also responded to the scene, Baxter said.
A temporary evacuation shelter has been established at the Betty Ong Recreation Center, at 1199 Mason Street, to assist those who have been affected, according to fire officials.
Fire officials had asked people to avoid the area near the 1100 and 1200 blocks of Stockton Street. Residents were also advised to close their windows to avoid smoke from the fire.
A cause for the fire has not been determined and an investigation into the incident could take some time, Baxter said.
