San Carlos Woman Drove Up On Sidewalk To Pass Cars Before Crashing

BELMONT (CBS SF) -- A distraught San Carlos woman drove up onto the sidewalk before crashing at Carlmont Drive in Belmont on Wednesday, police said.

Police received a report of a reckless driver passing cars on the wrong side of the road on northbound Sixth Avenue near Ralston Avenue around5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Belmont police Capt. Patrick Halleran said.

The vehicle, a Volkswagen sedan, was reported traveling west on Ralston Avenue, where at one point it allegedly passed cars by driving on the sidewalk.

The driver then turned south on to Alameda de las Pulgas from Ralston and attempted to turn right on to Carlmont Drive, but turned too wide and stopped at the curb, narrowly missing a parked car, according to police.

When the driver backed up, she struck a Maserati sedan that was traveling east on Carlmont Drive.

Police contacted the Volkswagen's driver, a 21-year-old San Carlos woman, whose name is being withheld.

The woman turned out to be driving without a license and "appeared to be suffering from some type of emotional crisis," Halleran said.

She was taken to an area hospital for an evaluation.

Both the woman and the driver of the Maserati were uninjured in the crash, according to police.
