San Bruno Officials Debating Future Of Remaining Pipeline
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The San Bruno City Council is taking three options into consideration over what to do with the pipeline involved in the 2010 blast that killed eight people.
The pipeline has been out of service since the blast, and some residents are pushing for its complete removal.
"It's a very sensitive issue," said San Bruno Mayor Jim Ruane. "Of course the explosion is over and the fire is over, and we're rebuilding, but that pipe is still, parts of it actually, are still under the ground there."

Ruane said that on Tuesday, the City Council will discuss three plans: leaving the pipe in the ground and filling it with concrete, tearing the pipe completely out, or a hybrid approach - removing part, and filling in the rest.
Complete removal has its issues.
"It's many, many months of work under and around our sewer lines...it would be a major disruption," said Ruane.
PG&E said that it will pay for the full cost of the operation, whichever option the city chooses.
