Prominent Same-Sex Marriage Advocates Filing For Divorce
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) - One of the leading couples in the effort to legalize same-sex marriage in California is divorcing.
Molly McKay and Davina Kotulski have separated after 15 years together, seven as a married couple.
McCay described the breakup as the worst thing that has ever happened to her during an interview with the Bay Area Reporter. She said she is reminded of all of the gay kids who clipped pictures of the couple and said she loves the fact that they were able to give kids a picture of true love.
"Our hearts go out to Molly and Davina and any couple that's having a hard time, they deserve out compassion," said same-sex marriage advocate Stuart Gaffney.
John Lewis and Gaffney were plaintiffs in the 2008 California Supreme Court case that ended with 18,000 couples, including Molly and Davina, being allowed to marry.
"There are over 1,138 rights alone that come with marriage and those rights are very, very important to people," said Lewis. "Both in marriage, when its' working, and unfortunately, if a marriage breaks up, and divorce ensues."
McKay said she will continue to campaign for same-sex marriage and will be at the marriage pavilion during San Francisco Pride festivities.
