Roof Partially Collapses At Safeway In East San Jose
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Employees in a Safeway supermarket in East San Jose were able to get everyone out of the building Thursday afternoon before a large section of roof collapsed, according to fire officials.
Firefighters were called to the store at 1771 E. Capitol Expressway shortly before 4 p.m. on an initial report of a water flow alarm, said Fire Capt. Peter Caponio.
When they arrived, they found store employees and customers standing outside, with part of the building's roof collapsed.
Caponio estimated that a roughly 70 foot by 70 foot section of roof was affected by the collapse.
Employees told fire officials that they had heard some creaking noises in the building and told people to get out of the building. The roof caved in a short time later.
A search of the building found that no one was still inside, Caponio said.
Power and gas to the building were shut off and neighboring businesses evacuated while firefighters secured the area.
One person had minor injuries to their foot at the scene but did not require transportation and it is unclear whether the injuries were related to the roof collapse, Caponio said.
On Friday morning, the store was completely closed. There was no estimated time given as to when it would reopen.
