Roberta Teams Up With Warriors For New Community Service Project

KPIX 5 Morning Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales shares her experiences around the Bay Area.

How often do you have the chance to have a "play day?" Well, I had the chance and loved it! Ok, it wasn't a "whole day." In fact, it wasn't even half a day! It was more like a couple of hours, but it was fun in the sun AND I had the opportunity to hang out with a Golden State Warrior!

Recently, I teamed up with Warriors Guard Brandon Rush, Kaiser Permanente and Playworks for a "Get Fit Time-Out." Our day of activity was held at Lincoln Elementary School in Oakland. Our mission, to educate Bay Area youth on the importance of healthy eating and active living. Rush will provide health and fitness tips, words of encouragement and participate in various instructional activities with the 245 students.

I love the Golden State Warriors. Not just because they are the NBA World Champions! Well, that too. But, over the past 20 years,  I have fallen in love with this organization because of their quiet commitment to our community. I can think back to many occasions, where I have sat side by side with a professional basketball player from the amazing team, and folded socks for the homeless during the holiday season. Or built homes for humanity. All this, while being under the radar. Not boasting their "appearance," rather just showing up and getting the job done.

The Golden State Warriors have a new program! "Get Fit" will reach nearly 60,000 students at 111 Bay Area elementary schools this season, thanks to a new partnership with Playworks. This innovative collaboration between the Warriors, Kaiser Permanente and Playworks will help create a culture of health and wellness for students, staff and teachers at schools across the Bay Area.

This is my second time being involved with the Warriors "Get Fit" program and this time I had the chance to hang with "B Rush"! I learned about his diet and dedication to fitness while we exercised and spoke with the students of Lincoln Elementary under a bright September sun. Great job Warriors!

This is the fifth of five events, the Warriors have hosted at local schools during the month of September for the annual Back to School in the Bay initiative to help raise awareness about the importance of education.

Please send weather questions, observations and photos to me, Gonzales@kpix.cbs.com and I look forward to hearing from you!
