Roberta Answers, 'When Will This Gray May Weather End?'

Q: Do you know when Gray May will finally end? It has lasted for nearly the entire month and it is making me feel very depressed. Brian; Danville
A: Okay Brian, I must cheer you up!
Here's the deal. The San Francisco Bay Area has been unseasonably cool since right around May 5. The reason is basically the return of a very deep marine layer. Today, we have a couple of different things going on. Actually, three things! First, the marine layer is roughly 3000 feet deep. With that kind of layering of the clouds, heavy drizzle with up to a .10 of an inch of rain has been noted across the coast and bay areas. Second, we have an upper level disturbance anchored off the coast. With the precipitation rotating in a counter clockwise fashion around the center of the low, it's tossing isolated showers into the inland areas, with up to nearly .20 inches of measurable rain. And third, a stronger upper low is forecast to drop south into the Bay Area this afternoon, triggering showery activity, with instability in the eastern hills producing a chance of thunder.
By Friday, lingering showers are possible and unseasonably cool temps, but by the weekend, high pressure contributes to partly sunny skies and slightly warmer temperatures. For scorching heat, I don't see any of that , however Danville should hit near 90 on June 4, otherwise the unseasonably cool/mild weather conditions through the end of the month.
Think of the bright side, the clouds and cool and damp conditions are a blessing to firefighters who now say, due to the drought, fire season is 24/7 twelve months of the year.
