Richmond Police Searching For Suspect In Fatal Shooting Of Teen Boy
RICHMOND (CBS SF) -- Police in Richmond are searching for a suspect who fatally shot a 14-year-old boy Monday morning, a police lieutenant said.
Officers responded at 9:22 a.m. to a shooting picked up by the ShotSpotter gunshot detection system in the 3300 block of Ohio Avenue, Richmond police Lt. Andre Hill said.
Responding officers found a teen suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Medical responders were unable to stabilize the teen and he was pronounced dead at the scene, Hill said.
The victim was apparently found on the Richmond Greenway trail. Witnesses reported seeing a male suspect running from the scene, Hill said.
Officers searched for the suspect on that pedestrian and bicyclist path, which is near BART tracks. A K-9 unit from BART police was also called to the scene to assist in the search.
BART officials announced on Twitter shortly before 11 a.m. that trains were experiencing delays of up to 10 minutes between the El Cerrito del Norte and Richmond stations because of the police activity.
Residents in the community were shaken by the shooting of the teen.
"I've lived here my whole life," said Michael Latour of Richmond. "I love my city, but this killing is out of control."
Family members confirmed to KPIX 5 that the victim was 14-year-old Xavier McClannahan, a freshman at Kennedy High School.
"Keep your kids close to you," said McClannahan's great aunt Barbara Whittner. "Know where they are at all times."
Authorities did not say they had a motive as of Monday afternoon.
"I can't say it's gang related yet until we have identified who he is and what went down," said Richmond Police Captain Mark Gagan. "But often, what gets said just before a shooting can give us an indication what the motivation is. So right now our officers are working to get witness statements."
