Armed Suspect Injured In Shootout With Richmond Police Identified As 19-Year-Old Man
RICHMOND (CBS SF) -- Police released a photo of a 19-year-old man who was shot by a police sergeant after the two exchanged gunfire in Richmond on Saturday.
Police identified 19-year-old Daniel Tolosa as the man who shot at an officer after a vehicle and foot chase shortly after 7 p.m., according to police.
A sergeant on patrol in the area of 25th Street and Roosevelt Avenue attempted to make a traffic stop when Tolosa, who was driving the vehicle, allegedly failed to yield.
Tolosa gave chase and led the sergeant to the 500 block of 38th Street, less than a mile away, where Richmond police Capt. Bisa French said
Tolosa fled from the vehicle on foot.
The officer could see he was armed, French said.
The officer pursued the suspect and as they were moving towards the rear of a residence, the officer and the suspect exchanged gunfire, French said.
Tolosa allegedly tried to run away and again, the two shot at each other, but this time, French said the officer struck the suspect.
Tolosa was taken into custody and then transported to the hospital, French said.
She said it doesn't appear that Tolosa's injuries are life-threatening and the officer was not hit in the exchange.
A gun was recovered at the scene, French said.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office will lead an investigation into the case, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
