Richmond Parolee Arrested After Fleeing Burglary Scene

RICHMOND (BCN) -- A Richmond police officer fired a shot at a parolee who allegedly charged him while fleeing a burglary early Saturday morning and later arrested the 47-year-old suspect after he was tracked by a police K-9, a police spokeswoman said.

An officer responded to a reported break-in at a bar adjacent to Spot Liquor Store at 1 Tewksbury Ave. and saw a suspect inside the business around 3:40 a.m., Sgt. Bisa French said.

"Somebody called saying they heard noises in there," French said.

The suspect, later identified as James Couzens, came out of the bar and advanced on the responding officer, who was waiting for backup, French said.

The officer ordered Couzens to stop, but he continued to advance with a metal object in his hand, prompting the officer to fire one shot.

Couzens was not hit by the gunfire and fled on foot.

A police K-9 quickly tracked him down and Couzens was taken into custody.
